  • Ben Overview

Ben is an A-Rank Fire Defense Agent who's capable of generating team-wide Shield effects that increase everyone's survivability in combat. With his high base DEF, he can also absorb a lot of DMG for the team, but that's not all, his Special Attack can block enemy attacks. When tapping or holding Ben's Special Attack, he'll enter a blocking stance with his weapon, gaining a Shield with a hitpoint of up to 16% of his Max HP. Any attacks inflicted on him during this skill will have to break through this Shield first before being able to actually damage him. After a successful block, Ben can follow up with a devastating counter attack dealing massive Fire DMG. Despite being a Defense character, Ben has a really high base ATK stat thanks to his Core Passive converting 40% of his DEF into ATK, this single interaction opens up another way to play Ben, not as a traditional tank, but as a DPS character as well.

Ben Overview

Ben Skill Priority

Below are the best skill priorities for Ben:

SkillPriority
Core Skill Core Skill★★★★★ (Top)
Basic Attack Basic Attack★★ (Medium)
Chain Attack Chain Attack★★★ (High)
Special Attack Special Attack★★★★ (Top)
Dodge Dodge (Low)
Assist Assist★★ (Medium)

Ben's main contribution as a Defense character is generating Shields for the whole squad, and the Shield's hitpoint increases substantially with every upgrade of his Core Skill, making it the top priority. His Special Attack comes next, as it is the move he generally uses the most in battle. Ben's Chain Attack stands as his most powerful single attack, but its low usage in combat means that its impact isn't as great as you would think it is, making it just below his Special Attack in priority. Lastly, Ben's Basic AttackDodge and Assist skill sit at the lowest priority, with Dodge being the least impactful of the three due to its value being highly situational.

Ben Best W-Engines

As a Defense character who scales on his DEF stat, it only makes sense that he wants as much DEF as possible, though ATKCrit Rate and Crit DMG are also much appreciated. Defense characters generally don't have many options due to them being in the minority, but Ben can be built to either become a Support or a DPS depending on your choice of W-Engine. If you go for the Support route, Tusks of Fury is the best choice. If you go for the DPS route, Tremor Trigram Vessel is the best choice.

Ben Best Teams

Ben works best when he's paired with another member of Belobog Heavy Industries or a Fire character, because then he would be able to provide additional Crit Rate for the squad when his Shield is active, maximising his contribution.

1. DPS Ben Team

For DPS Ben's teams, we follow the hypercarry setup, which means Ben is paired with a Stunner and a Support, or two Supports. For Stunners, Dialyn, Koleda and Lighter work amazingly as Ben's teamates, capable of applying Daze quickly while also providing powerful buffs, Koleda specifically has a special interaction with Ben and will have her kit upgraded when she's paired with him. Caesar has her own category as a Stun-Defense hybrid, she can Stun enemies relatively quickly along with increasing the team's survivability. Nicole, despite not having her Additional Ability activated here, doesn't lose out on anything as Ben can't make use of it either way, making her a great free to play option.

2. Support Ben Teams

As a Support, Ben's team options are quite limited, as he mostly only benefit benefit Fire Attack characters. With that, his only teamates would be Soldier 11 and Evelyn. You're free to use other Attack characters of different elements, but keep in mind that they wouldn't be as great with Ben.

Ben Mindscape Cinema

Ben Mindscape

M1: Reacting Force
  • Rating: ★★ (Good)
  • Effect: When successfully Blocking an enemy with Ben's Special Attack or EX Special Attack, the DMG dealt by the blocked enemy is reduced by 30% for 15s.
  • For survivability, this Mindscape is quite decent. Though for offensive capabilities, it offers nothing.
M2: Offense Through Defense
  • Rating: ★★★ (Pretty Good)
  • Effect: When successfully triggering a Block Counter during Ben's Special Attack or EX Special Attack, inflict an additional 300% of Ben's DEF as DMG.
  • Ben's Mindscape 2 provides a bit of extra DMG when successfully performing a Block Counter, making it a nice addition.
M3: Careful Accounting
  • Rating: ★★ (Good)
  • Effect: Basic Attack, Assist, Dodge, Special Attack, and Chain Attack Lv. +2
  • This Mindscape only offers numerical skill level increases but still provide a somewhat decent boost in Ben's DMG output.
M4: Agile Adaptation
  • Rating: ★★★ (Pretty Good)
  • Effect: When successfully blocking enemy DMG with Ben’s invulnerable effect during his Special Attack or EX Special Attack, the following counter deals 30% more DMG.
  • Mindscape 4 boosts the DMG of Ben's Block Counter by 30%, which is actually going to be quite a lot if you're playing DPS Ben. But doesn't really do much if you're playing Support Ben.
M5: Meticulous Detail
  • Rating: ★★ (Good)
  • Effect: Basic Attack, Assist, Dodge, Special Attack, and Chain Attack Lv. +2
  • This Mindscape is identical to Ben's Mindscape 3, it only offers numerical skill level increases but a decent boost in his overall damage.
M6: Wild spirit
  • Rating: ★★★★★ (Best)
  • Effect: After launching an attack or follow-up attack during Ben's EX Special Attack, Daze inflicted by Basic Attacks, Dash Attack, and Dodge Counter is increased by 20%, lasting 12s.
  • Hands down the best Mindscape for Support Ben, and in a way, DPS Ben as well. This Mindscape turns Ben into a Stun-Defense hybrid.

Conclusion

To summarise, Ben is a really unique Defense Agent in Zenless Zone Zero with 2 different playstyles.
