Understanding the Heads-Up Display (HUD)
Agent Bars and Meanings
HP Bar
The Health bar, or HP bar, indicates the current amount of health the Agent possesses. When depleted, the character will be defeated in battle.
Energy Bar
Adjacent to the HP bar is the energy bar, serving a distinct purpose from the Health bar. While the HP bar measures vitality, the energy bar functions as a resource for deploying skills. Using skills depletes this bar, but it gradually regenerates over time or through specific actions within the game.
Enemy Bars and Meanings
HP bar
This enemy HP bar functions similarly to your character's HP indicator but for your adversary.
Daze Gauge
Below the enemy's health bar lies the Daze gauge, a unique meter that fills incrementally with each successful hit inflicted upon them. Once the gauge reaches its maximum capacity of 100%, the enemy enters a Stunned state. While Stunned, they become more vulnerable, taking increased damage from subsequent attacks while temporarily immobilized.
Character Control Basics
Control schemes can vary depending on the platform you are using to play Zenless Zone Zero. For the purposes of this blog, I will detail the control setup as it applies to a PC player.
Basic Attacks
Basic Attack is executed with the left click and is the attack type that you will use most frequently in defeating enemies. Basic Attack is usually a sequence of attacks that can be chained together to perform a combo. Although they don't deal a lot of damage by themselves, Basic Attacks generate Energy for your Special Attacks, fill up the enemy Daze gauge slowly, and increase your Decibel Rating which will give you access to your ultimate.
Dodge
Conversely, right-clicking serves a defensive purpose, known as Dodge. Use the Dodge button to evade enemy attacks. Dodging makes the character invulnerable for a few seconds. Note that there's a 6 millisecond cooldown when using the Dodge button which prevents you from spamming the move.
Special Attack and EX Special Attack
Pressing the 'E' key triggers the Special Attack in Zenless Zone Zero. Accumulating Energy enables the execution of potent Special Attacks, which are pivotal for swiftly overcoming adversaries. Moreover, surpassing the threshold indicated by the Energy Icon, marked in red on the Energy bar, enhances the effectiveness of the subsequent Special Attack. Keep an eye on the Energy Icon; when it illuminates, seize the opportunity to unleash an EX Special Attack, delivering even greater impact in combat.
Ultimates
The “Q” key refers to Ultimate in ZZZ. Ultimates are unique moves that deal massive damage to multiple enemies. Notably, it operates differently compared to standard energy bars seen in games like Genshin Impact. Instead, it correlates with the decibel rating, represented by the orange gauge. When you fill-up the Decibel Rating, you can perform this move of your current character. But the Decibel Rating is shared by all team members. So if one agent cast ultimate and deplete the Decibel Rating, other team members will be unable to trigger their Ultimates. You can build up the Decibel Rating faster by performing Dodge Counters, Special Attacks, and Chain Attacks.
Switch Agents
There is no leaping in ZZZ. Instead, the "space" key serves to switch Agents. This action summons the next Agent in line while replacing the current one. Agent switching plays a crucial role in combat, capable of triggering Perfect Assists. Perfect Assists are activated by timing your Agent switch just before an enemy attack strikes. This precise maneuver can prompt either a Defensive Assist or an Evasive Assist, depending on the type of the next Agent. To execute Perfect Assists, you must accumulate Assist Points, which are earned by performing Chain Attacks or casting Ultimates.
Combat Strategies
Combat in Zenless Zone Zero revolves around a dynamic interplay between offensive and defensive maneuvers. Players will find themselves often alternating between launching attacks and evading enemy blows. The following are some strategies you can use in a battle.
Prepare basic attacks for subsequent output
In ZZZ, basic attacks deal minimal damage, primarily to set up for powerful ultimate moves and chain attacks. By using basic attacks, we accumulate energy to unleash special skills (E), while also building up the decibel rating for ultimate moves. Moreover, basic attacks accumulate the Daze gauge on enemies, aiding in explosive damage output afterwards.
Unleash the EX Special Attack on time
The EX special attack, a potent move that becomes available when the energy bar is sufficiently filled. When unleashed, it inflicts significant damage and often incorporates additional effects that strategically position the player or debilitate the enemy. Furthermore, executing the special attack contributes to the decibel rating, hastening the casting of your ultimate.
Choose the appropriate character to unleash the ultimate ability
The ultimate ability, empowered by the decibel rating, represents the pinnacle of a character's combat potential. Once the decibel rating reaches its threshold, signaled by a full gauge, the ultimate ability can be activated. As mentioned earlier, the decibel rating is shared among all team members, so selecting the right character to cast their ultimate maximizes your damage output.
Use character switching to evade damage
Quickly swapping characters is crucial for maintaining combat flow and optimizing your team's abilities. Opting for character switching instead of simple evasion can provide numerous benefits to your team, and the next character to enter can unleash enhanced attacks.
Take note of enemy Daze gauge to execute Chain Attacks
When enemy Daze gauge are maxed out, they enter a stun state. During this state, attacks against them deal significantly increased damage, varying by enemy type. Additionally, using heavy attacks (Special Attacks or EX Special Attacks) in this state allows characters to Chain Attacks, dealing substantial damage. These coordinated maneuvers involve chaining together abilities with party members, allowing for devastating combos that deal substantial damage to the target.
