Astra Yao Gameplay and Playstyle
Astra Yao is an Ether and Support character. In combat, she uses her musical talents to inspire and aid the whole team. When she enters her Idyllic Cadenza state, she starts a mini-concert, boosting the squad's damage and providing buffs. In this state, switching to other Agents keeps her singing from the backlines, where she becomes invulnerable. Astra's Ultimate heals the team and attacks enemies, with the next two character switches triggering Chain Attacks for extra damage. To end her performance, hold the Basic Attack, which also heals the squad.

Chain Attack: Tipsy Concerto and Ultimate: Fantasian Sonata
Astra Yao’s Chain Attack is your main priority since it provides her invincibility when activated and her source of Ether damage in battle. In addition, enhancing this skill increases her damage output and team survivability through her Idyllic Cadenza state.
Special Attack: Windchimes & Oaths, Idyllic Cadenza, and Chord
Focus next on Astra Yao’s Special Attack since it significantly boosts her team’s damage while providing healing. Astral’s team can reach up to 30% increased Attack damage, which increases her teammates’ damage potential. Leveling this skill will help in prolonged battles, especially during the end game.
Basic Attack: Interlude, Chorus, and Finale
You also need to raise Astra Yao’s Basic Attack since it contributes to her total damage output in battle. Furthermore, her Basic Attacks synergize with her unique passive, Idyllic Cadenza, which enhances her normal attacks when activated.
Assist: Firework Stream, Mutual Affection, and First Encounter
Same with Astra Yao’s Basic Attack, you should also upgrade her Assist skills to unlock her defensive capabilities when avoiding enemy hits. It will also help in unlocking additional effects for her such as Tremolo and Tome Cluster, which boost Ether DMG.
Dodge: Mini Waltz, Lunar Eclipse Symphony, and Umbrella Waltz
Astra Yao’s Dodge attacks and skills are her lowest priority because they do not offer any contribution to her offensive support and healing capabilities. Save your materials instead and level her best teammates' essential skills instead.
Best W-Engines for Astra Yao
Below are the best W-Engines for Astra Yao:
1. Elegant Vanity
W-Engine | Base Stats |
![]() Elegant Vanity (S-Rank) |
+713 Base ATK (Level 60) +30% ATK% (Level 60) |
W-Engine Effect (R1) | Lush Grapine: When any squad member enters the field through a Quick Assist, Chain Attack, Defensive Assist, or Evasive Assist, the equipper gains 5 Energy. This effect can trigger once every 5s. When the equipper consumes 25 or more Energy, the damage dealt by all squad members increases by 10%, stacking up to 2 times, and lasting 15s. Repeated triggers refresh the duration. Only one instance of this effect can exist in the same squad. |
Elegant Vanity is Astra Yao’s signature W-Engine and her best-in-slot option. The Attack boosts help in increasing her and her team’s damage output as well as boost her healing effectiveness in battle. Apart from the multitude of attack boosts, this W-Engine also provides her Energy Regen whenever she deals Chain Attacks or switches to another teammate through her Assist skills and moves. Since Astra Yao’s playstyle involves channeling her energy into her song attacks, she can further increase the damage output of her teammates.

2. Weeping Cradle
W-Engine | Base Stats |
![]() Weeping Cradle (S-Rank) |
+684 Base ATK (Level 60) +24% PEN Ratio (Level 60) |
W-Engine Effect (R1) | Punishment: While off-field, the equipper's Energy Regen increases by 0.6/s. Attacks from the equipper enhance the squad's DMG against a struck target by 10% for 3 seconds. During this period, this effect is further increased by 1.7% every 0.5s, up to a maximum additional increase of 10.2%. Repeated triggers only refresh its duration without refreshing the DMG increase effect. Passive effects of the same name do not stack. |
Rina’s signature W-Engine, Weeping Cradle, is an alternate S-Rank weapon option for Astra Yao. The high Base Attack value provides more damage output to her and teammates Quick Assist and Chain Attack when Idyllic Cadenza state is active on the field. This W-Engine also gives additional energy regeneration for Astral while she is inactive in battle. Furthermore, this S-Rank weapon provides additional damage boost to all her teammates whenever Astral struck her enemies. Unfortunately, her kit will not be able to maximize the PEN Ratio buff unlike Rina.
3. Kaboom the Cannon
W-Engine | Base Stats |
![]() Kaboom the Cannon (A-Rank) |
+624 Base ATK (Level 60) +50% Energy Regen (Level 60) |
W-Engine Effect (R5) | Stampede Accident: When any friendly unit in the squad attacks and hits an enemy, all friendly units' ATK increases by 4% for 8s, stacking up to 4 times. The duration of each stack is calculated separately, and each friendly unit can provide 1 stack of the buff. Passive effects of the same name do not stack. |
Kaboom the Cannon is the recommended A-Rank W-Engine option for Astra Yao. This weapon provides stackable attack buff up to 16% to her team whenever an active unit deals damage to an enemy. This buff last longer compared to other A-Rank W-Engines. Lastly, it gives Astra Yao additional Energy Regen.
4. The Vault
W-Engine | Base Stats |
![]() The Vault (A-Rank) |
+624 Base ATK (Level 60) +50% Energy Regen (Level 60) |
W-Engine Effect (R5) | Money-Lover: Dealing Ether DMG using an EX Special Attack, Chain Attack, or Ultimate increases all squad members' DMG against the target by 24% and increases the equipper's Energy Regen by 0.8/s for 2s. Passive effects of the same name do not stack. |
Aside from Energy Regen, this W-Engine also boost Astra Yao’s Ether damage. Additionally, The Vault capitalizes on Astra Yao’s playstyle since it involves her using Chain Attacks and Special Attacks frequently, which results in an additional damage boost for her and her allies during combat. Take note that the buff only lasts in short duration.
5. Slice of Time
W-Engine | Base Stats |
![]() Slice of Time (A-Rank) |
+594 Base ATK (Level 60) +20% PEN Ratio (Level 60) |
W-Engine Effect (R5) | Say Cheese: Any squad members' Dodge Counter, EX Special Attack, Assist Attack, or Chain Attack respectively generates 32/40/48/55 more Decibels and generates 1.1 Energy for the equipper. This effect can trigger once every 12s. The cooldown for each type of attack is independent of others. Passive effects of the same name do not stack. |
Slice of Time, an A-Rank W-Engine, helps Astral gain more Decibels to unleash her Ultimate quicker, which also benefits her teammates in terms of her buffs. Aside from the Attack boost, wearing this weapon will also help generate energy faster through her normal and enhanced Special Attacks resulting into more Chord stacks. Similar to Weeping Cradle, Astral will not be able to maximize the W-Engine’s innate PEN ratio boost.

Is Astra Yao Still Worth Pulling?
This Zenless Zone Zero Astra Yao build guide emphasizes her role both as a Support and Healer. Her strongest skills, like Chain Attacks, Special Attacks, and Idyllic Cadenza State, are her primary source of damage, buffs, and healing. She works effectively with any team compositions, such as Hyper Carry teams, Quick Swap teams, Stun teams, and Disorder (Anomaly) teams. As the only S-Rank healer and buffer, she can be partnered with any DPS and Sub DPS units, namely Evelyn, Miyabi, Lighter, Yanagi, Harumasa, Burnice, Jane Doe, Zhu Yuan, Ellen, and others. Also, with Support units like Caesar, Rina, Nicole, and Lucy.
Astra Yao is worth pulling on her debut release because she is the only Support who provides healing in prolonged and challenging battles along with team-wide damage buffs. In previous versions, the source of healing for teams was through Bangboos, namely Avocaboo and Exploreboo. Having sustained healing in combat opens up your DPS units to be more aggressive in battle, especially in end game content such as Shiyu Defense. To keep up with the ever-growing meta of Zenless Zone Zero, you need to acquire the famous singer and actress of New Eridu, especially when difficult endgame modes and adjustments come in future version updates.
