A Monk, a Stolen Net, and the Disguise System at Its Best

All Lives Are Equal is one of those side quests in Where Winds Meet that sounds mundane on paper — help a monk find his stolen fishing net — and then halfway through you're disguised as a random market vendor trying to trick someone into revealing where he hid the thing. It's the kind of quest that reminds you this game has a sense of humor tucked under all the wuxia gravitas. The story is short, the payoff is solid, and the disguise section is a good introduction to the mechanic if you haven't used it much yet.

The quest is classified as a Wandering Tale, which means it doesn't show up on your main map as an obvious marker until you trigger it through NPC interaction. A lot of players walk past Jingchen entirely because they're at the Grand Imperial Temple during the day. He only appears at night — that's the whole trick to unlocking it. If you need Echo Beads or top-up currency for other content, LootBar has competitive rates worth checking before the in-game store.

Quest Details at a Glance

wwmquest

Type: Wandering Tale (side quest). Location: Grand Imperial Temple, Kaifeng City. Trigger condition: Night only — Xu hour or later works reliably. NPCs involved: Jingchen (monk), He San (suspect), He Da (the man you impersonate), Wuyan (disguise shop owner). Required item: Rattan Paper (obtainable from Wang's Woodcraft near the Grand Imperial Temple, costs 1,000 Coins). Disguise difficulty: 3 out of 5.

Rewards upon completion: Echo Jade x20, Kaifeng Exploration x10, Coin x1,500, Character EXP x1,500. Claim through the Wandering Tales page under Exploration in the menu — the quest doesn't auto-deliver rewards on completion.

How to Unlock the Quest

Head to the Grand Imperial Temple in Kaifeng City — you can fast travel directly via the Grand Imperial Temple boundary stone. The critical step most players miss: it has to be night. Jingchen, the monk who starts the quest, strolls near the Release Pond by the Temple only after dark. Xu hour works reliably. If you arrive during daytime, use the time-change mechanic from the menu to skip ahead to night rather than waiting in real time.

Once it's night, look for Jingchen walking along the pond's edge near the Grand Imperial Temple boundary stone. He's not standing in one place — he's moving slowly around the water. Walk up and start a conversation. He'll explain that the Release Pond is where people throw coins as offerings, and that he fishes them out every night to prevent the fish from swallowing them. His net has gone missing, and he suspects someone stole it. That conversation triggers the Wandering Tale and marks the quest active.

Full Walkthrough — Step by Step

Step 1 — Talk to Jingchen at Night

Already covered above. Find him by the Release Pond at the Grand Imperial Temple at night. Xu hour is the earliest reliable window. If you're struggling to find him, make sure you're searching near the pond itself rather than the main temple entrance — he walks the pond perimeter, not the temple grounds.

Step 2 — Find He San and Question Him

After speaking with Jingchen, change the hour to Hai hour. He San appears nearby — he's in the area around the Grand Imperial Temple, not far from where you found Jingchen. The hour change is important: He San isn't present at Xu hour. Change time, then locate him.

Engage He San in conversation. He acts suspicious and deflects. He refuses to tell you where the net is no matter how you approach the dialogue. Disengage from him — this is intentional. The quest doesn't offer a way to pressure information out of He San directly. That's the entire point of the next section.

Step 3 — Find He Da and Paint His Portrait

He San isn't going to talk to you as yourself. But He Da is He San's associate — and He San will talk to He Da. So you need to become He Da.

Find He Da in the nearby market area. If he's not immediately visible, change time to midnight — He Da's schedule puts him reliably in location at that hour. Once you've found him, take out your Rattan Paper from the inventory and select the Paint option. This triggers the portrait mini-game — interact with He Da to take his likeness onto the paper. This portrait is what you'll submit to Wuyan for the disguise.

If you don't have Rattan Paper, get it from Wang's Woodcraft in Kaifeng Prefecture, just east of the Grand Imperial Temple boundary stone. One sheet costs 1,000 Coins. It's a frequent crafting material in Wandering Tales that involve the disguise mechanic, so grabbing a few at once is worth the extra Coins.

Step 4 — Go to Wuyan and Put On the Disguise

With He Da's portrait in hand, head to Wuyan's disguise shop. Wuyan handles disguise requests in Kaifeng — she can temporarily make you look like someone else using a portrait. The Grand Imperial Temple fast travel point puts you close enough to reach her shop without significant travel.

Inside her shop, interact with Wuyan and select 'Put on a disguise.' Submit He Da's portrait. She'll apply the disguise, transforming your appearance to match He Da. The disguise difficulty for this specific transformation is rated 3 out of 5 — which means there's a moderate chance of the disguise being seen through if you act suspiciously or get too close to NPCs who know He Da personally. For this quest, the disguise holds as long as you go directly to He San and don't linger.

Step 5 — Return to He San as He Da

Disguised as He Da, walk back to the Grand Imperial Temple area and find He San again. He San now talks to you freely — as far as he knows, he's speaking to He Da. He'll reveal where the fishing net is hidden: behind the Antique shop. That's your next destination.

The disguise drops after you get the information you need, or when you leave the area. Don't worry about maintaining it for longer than the He San conversation — you have everything you need once he tells you the net's location.

Step 6 — Retrieve the Fishing Net

Go to the Antique shop in the area and look behind it. The fishing net is stashed at the back — a glowing interact prompt marks it once you're in the right spot. Pick it up. The quest objective updates immediately.

Step 7 — Return the Net to Jingchen

Head back to the Release Pond at the Grand Imperial Temple. Find Jingchen — he should still be near the pond at this hour. Hand him the fishing net. He's grateful, the fish are safe from coins, and the quest concludes with a short dialogue exchange about life, priorities, and why a monk spends his nights fishing for copper.

After the final conversation, go to Exploration in the menu and open the Wandering Tales page. Manually claim the rewards from there — the game doesn't automatically deliver them on quest completion. This is easy to forget and easy to fix.

Rewards — What You Actually Get

wwmreward

All Lives Are Equal delivers a modest but solid reward set for a short Wandering Tale:

Echo Jade x20 — one of the more useful currencies for upgrading Mystic Skills and other progression systems. Short quests that deliver 20 Echo Jade are worth doing consistently.

Kaifeng Exploration x10 — contributes directly to Kaifeng Exploration Level progress. Stacks meaningfully across multiple Wandering Tales and side quests in the region.

Coin x1,500 — decent Coin return for a quest that takes less than 15 minutes once you know the steps.

Character EXP x1,500 — standard EXP reward for Wandering Tales at this difficulty tier.

The Echo Jade and Exploration Points are the headline items here. Both feed directly into systems that matter for progression — Mystic Skill upgrades and region unlock thresholds respectively. Running Wandering Tales in Kaifeng consistently for their Exploration contribution is one of the more efficient ways to hit the milestones that unlock Talents and additional Mystic Slots.

Common Problems and How to Fix Them

Can't Find Jingchen

He only appears at night near the Release Pond at the Grand Imperial Temple. If it's daytime, open the menu and change to Xu hour or later. Don't search near the temple entrance — he's specifically walking the pond perimeter. If you've already started the quest and he's not where you expect him, verify you're at the correct pond (the one near the Grand Imperial Temple boundary stone, not elsewhere in Kaifeng).

He San Isn't Appearing

He San shows up at Hai hour, not Xu hour. If He San is nowhere after talking to Jingchen, change the time forward to Hai hour and search the area around the temple again. He's not far from where you found Jingchen — same general area, different NPC.

He Da Isn't at the Market

Change time to midnight. He Da's schedule is specifically reliable at that hour. If you're at a different time and He Da isn't visible, midnight is the fix. His location is in the market area near the Grand Imperial Temple — not deep in the city.

Don't Have Rattan Paper

Wang's Woodcraft in Kaifeng Prefecture sells it for 1,000 Coins per sheet. The shop is east of the Grand Imperial Temple boundary stone. Buy more than one while you're there — Rattan Paper comes up in other Wandering Tales that use the disguise mechanic and it's more efficient to have it in inventory than to make a separate trip each time.

Rewards Didn't Appear After Completion

Wandering Tales don't auto-deliver. Go to Exploration in the main menu, open Wandering Tales, find All Lives Are Equal in the list, and manually claim the rewards from there. This is a consistent quirk of the Wandering Tales system — easy to miss if you're used to quests that deliver rewards directly on completion.

Final Thoughts

All Lives Are Equal is a good one. It's short, it's focused, and the disguise section is more interesting than it has any right to be for a side quest about a fishing net. The Rattan Paper mechanic of painting an NPC's portrait to take on their appearance is one of Where Winds Meet's more creative quest systems, and this Wandering Tale uses it in a way that actually makes narrative sense rather than just being a mechanical checkbox.

If you're working through Wandering Tales in Kaifeng for Exploration Points, this one is worth prioritizing early — the time investment is low, the Echo Jade return is solid, and the disguise section is a useful introduction to Wuyan's shop for quests that use it later. Visit the Grand Imperial Temple at night, talk to Jingchen, and follow the fish.

For Echo Beads and top-up currency for other content in the Jianghu, the Where Winds Meet top up page on LootBar has the rates I use. Good luck helping the fish.
