There are clear meta options that are way better than the other formations most of the time. So, if you want to counter all the sweats you’ll probably be going up against during FUT Champs in TOTS, you need to know which formations to use to play.

We ranked these based off of how well they counter popular formations, and how good all the cards feel in-game. Ranking Our Top Three Formations & Tactics for FC 26

The Best “Balanced” Formation in FC 26: 4-5-1 Flat

Since launch, the 4-5-1 has arguably been the best formation throughout the FC 26 cycle. If you like playing through the middle more than the wings, that’s still the case. This formation gives you five attackers any time you have the ball, with solid defensive cover so you aren’t exposed at the back despite overloading the attack. Here’s a look at the exact formation and what tactics you want on each player:

The False 9 ST might not seem ideal, but it works great in this formation. If your Inside Forward LM/RM have good shooting stats and Playstyles along with good pace, they’ll substitute for your ST anytime they come deep to help with Playmaking. The central CM absolutely has to be set to a defensive role to cover all over centre when your LCM and RCM are busy attacking. Just set the Build-Up Style to balanced and the Roles will do the rest.

The defence is pretty standard. Even if it’s boring, it will stay compact the entire time off the ball. You shouldn’t get caught out on counters. Now the important thing to do is to choose what Defensive Approach you want. We recommend 61 Depth for balanced cover, but this exact set-up makes 70+ Depth viable too if you want to play aggressively. So that comes down to personal preference.

The Best “Aggressive” Formation in FC 26: 4-4-1-1 Midfield

The 4-4-1-1 is super similar in shape to the 4-5-1, and it’s also one of the best counters for it. If you want to play more aggressively and counter all the sweats using 4-5-1, this setup could be a gamechanger for you since it gives you more presence in midfield despite the tactics being nearly identical. It’s a lot more attack-oriented, but perfect for anyone that doesn’t rely solely on AI-Defending to bail them out. Here’s the exact setup we use:

Once again, you want the Build-Up Style to be Balanced. Then, your Advanced Forward ST and Inside Forward LM/RM will overload the box anytime you’re attacking. Put the CAM on Shadow Striker to add yet another option near the box, and RCM will give all-round coverage. Perfect for players like Bruno Fernandes or Mariona that have decent defensive stats but even better attacking ones. The LCM will take care of defensive work.

For the fully aggressive approach, put your Depth at 80. Now there’s admittedly a big risk of long balls or through balls catching you out. But, manual defending against those is super easy since they’re usually so predictable. If you’re good at defending, this is the setup you want to have your players cover the entire pitch and still provide enough cover at the back.

The Best “Wide” Formation in FC 26: 4-2-1-3

The 4-2-1-3 isn’t as broken as it was last year in FC 26, but it’s still great for anyone that wants wingers in their team. If you like playing on the counter, these tactics are perfect because they overload your defence but keep at least 3 attackers forward at all times to launch forward:

The standard fully defensive back four and the two DMs are great for pressing up high. With those 6 defenders, it’s much harder to get caught on the counter. Play 70 Depth for high pressing at all times. You want two CDMs with very high passing in this formation. CDMs with Pinged, Incisive, or Long Ball are perfect for launching the counter through your LW/ST/RW, or to get the ball to your CAM so they can do the same. Conclusion

Depending on which of these three fit your style of play or squad best, they’re the best formations and tactics for FC 26. Any of them give lots of options to make triangles in attack, while staying fully in shape at the back despite pressing high. Any of them should help you get those couple of extra wins in FUT Champs for better TOTS player picks. And if you want better players for any of these formations, buy FC 26 coins from LootBar to get them.
