How do you play Rogue in Marvel Rivals?

Rogue in Marvel Rivals

Fans of Marvel’s X-Men group of mutants will likely already know who Rogue is. Having the ability to absorb the power and memories of whoever her skin comes in direct contact with, Marvel Rivals leans heavily into some of her most iconic renditions when it comes to skins, as shown by the Savage South skin that came out alongside the character. Of course, LootBar remains the best way to get any skins you may want.

As for her powers, Rogue doesn’t have the traditional flight power in Marvel Rivals. Taking the role of a vanguard, she uses hand-to-hand combos to remain mobile and take down enemies. In addition to dashes and stances that increase her defense, Rogue’s playing style also revolves around stealing the ultimate ability energy, stats, health, and even abilities of her enemies, making her the most versatile hero in the game yet.

Of course, regardless of her unique skill-stealing abilities, Rogue’s primary weapon is her versatility. Her mobility and role as an off-tank mean that she can use her shields to sponge damage for her allies, before using her awesome mobility to counterattack and deal damage. It’s the best of both worlds, making Rogue a hero that even duelist mains may enjoy.

All of Rogue’s abilities in Marvel Rivals

Rogue's basic attack in Marvel Rivals

The attack most players will likely be using the most is her basic normal attack. Her power surge punches are melee attacks that hit a maximum distance of 4.5m. What makes this attack stand out is that it’s more of a combo. The first two punches deal 35 damage, while the third one deals 45, effectively letting Rogue chain together attacks and stay on the move at the same time. This is the primary initiation attack, since Rogue moves forward to attack enemies, covering short distances quickly.

Defensive Stance

Rogue's Defensive Stance in Marvel Rivals

It wouldn’t be far-fetched to call Defensive Stance Rogue’s main bread and butter when it comes to staying alive. Using it prompts the hero to enter a stance where she absorbs nearby projectiles, making her the perfect shield for ranged allies. Incoming damage is also reduced, with some of the damage being absorbed.

It’s important to note that the block isn’t permanent. Players can hold the block button for about three seconds before the energy bar depletes, after which the shield automatically goes into a short cooldown. Because of this, it’s usually a good idea to save this ability for when the most dangerous enemy starts attacking.

Southern Brawl

Tied directly to Defensive Stance, Southern Brawl is used by clicking the basic attack button while in Defensive Stance. This prompts Rogue to dash forward and slam enemies in front, dealing some decent AoE damage. This damage is increased based on how much incoming damage Rogue’s Defensive Stance absorbed, making it the perfect way to initiate a counterattack.

A fully charged Southern Brawl can do around 150 damage, which is fairly high for a Vanguard. Considering her role, Southern Brawl basically punishes enemies for focusing on Rogue instead of the backline and encourages Rogue players to put themselves in the line of fire purposefully.

Chrono Kick Combo

Rogue's Chrono Kick Combo in Marvel Rivals

Acting as a way to deal damage to enemies as well as her main mode of mobility, Chrono Kick Combo has Rogue dash forward and launch any enemies hit into the air. Rogue jumps after them, gaining temporary flight that isn’t nearly as fast as other flying heroes. In this state, Rogue’s basic attacks transform into two sweeping projectile kicks that deal more damage than her ground attacks but are much slower. The upside is that they also grant bonus health to Rogue, increasing her sustainability.

While in the air, players will also see an indicator on the ground. Reactivating the Chrono Kick Combo ability prompts Rogue to slam into the ground at the marked area, hitting any enemies caught in the attack. If not for damage, then it isn’t exactly a bad idea to use the Chrono Kick Combo ability for increased mobility, especially considering it gives Rogue flight.

Fatal Attraction

At first glance, Rogue’s Fatal Attraction ability is a simple dash. However, using the ability again after already dashing once causes her to summon a circle around herself that damages enemies in the area. After a brief delay, Rogue automatically pulls all nearby targets closer to herself, mimicking a black hole or magnet.

This attack may not have the wow factor that her other abilities do, but its potential is still high. By going in the backline and activating this ability, players can basically halt squishy backliners and let teammates make quick work of them. The best way to go about things is to implement this attack with her other combos to stop any singular enemy from getting away.

Ability Absorption

Rogue using Ability Absorption in Marvel Rivals

Ability Absorption is what Rogue is primarily known for, and it’s no surprise why. Using the attack causes Rogue to dash forward and momentarily pin down any enemy hero she comes in contact with. She then channels energy out of the target, healing some of her health and absorbing one of the enemy’s attacks.

The attack Rogue absorbs depends on which hero she targets. However, players can see the ability icon of whatever ability her Ability Absorption will obtain on top of every enemy hero’s head. Those who don’t have absorbable abilities reset the cooldown of Rogue’s Fatal Attraction instead, letting her keep her combo going, and applying a buff on herself and a debuff on the enemy depending on the enemy’s role.

  • Strategists reduce the target's healing potential and give Rogue constant healing over time for the duration of her having the target’s ability.

  • Duelists reduce the target’s damage potential and increase Rogue’s own damage capabilities for the duration of having the target’s ability.

  • Vanguards increase Rogue’s maximum health and steal some health from the target for the duration of Rogue having the target’s ability.

This is where Rogue’s versatility comes into play, since it lets players use the abilities of other heroes. While it’s easy to get caught up in this, it’s recommended to use this ability on high-value targets, thanks to its high cooldown. For example, using Ability Absorption on Loki gives Rogue his Regenerative Domain, while Adam Warlock gives Soul Bond. Similarly, using it on a fellow Vanguard can give Rogue more tank abilities to make her more useful in her role.

Heartbreaker

Finally, Heartbreaker is Rogue’s ultimate ability. Activating it causes Rogue to create a zone around herself for eight seconds. Enemies caught in the zone not only receive constant damage, but their ultimate ability charge is also drained, stopping enemies from using their own ultimate abilities and paving the path for some insane plays. Rogue can see the ultimate charge of enemies caught in her ultimate’s zone, watching as the bar goes down.

If this wasn’t enough, the ability also gives Rogue the same buffs that she would have gotten if she had used Ability Absorption on a target. This means that the buffs given are determined by the role of the enemies caught in her attack.

What team-up ability does Rogue have in Marvel Rivals?

At launch, Rogue only has the Hearts as One team-up ability that she uses with Gambit. Activating it causes Rogue’s basic attacks to deal AoE damage to enemies, while also healing allies in a small area. The healing isn’t too much, but it’s enough to make a difference. Of course, considering team-up abilities constantly change, this may be removed or tweaked in a future update.

Conclusion

This wraps up our complete breakdown of Rogue’s abilities in Marvel Rivals. With her role and appearance already winning the hearts of countless players worldwide, those who want to main her will likely want to acquire some nice cosmetics to dominate in style. In this case, buying a Marvel Rivals top up or two is definitely the way to go.
