Gholdengo ex Deck Guide | Pokémon TCG Pocket

Pokémon TCG Pocket’s biggest appeal is that you can take any card and construct an awesome deck around it. Of course, the better the card, the stronger the overall deck will be. Gholdengo ex stands as one of the best recent cards in the game, especially if you know how to make a deck that utilizes the card’s Spending Rush ability.

What is the Gholdengo ex card in Pokémon TCG Pocket?

Gholdengo ex card in Pokémon TCG Pocket

Gholdengo ex is a Steel-type card in Pokémon TCG Pocket. Being a stage 1 evolution, this card evolves from Gimmighoul, who can be found in the Shining Revelry or Paldean Wonder packs. Of course, you may have to open a couple of packs to get the cards that you need, though LootBar can help with that.

Gholdengo ex’s status means that the enemy gets two points for knocking it out. Fortunately, it has a fairly high health of 150, which should help in survival as long as you play around its weakness against Fire-type attacks. The retreat cost of two energies is high, but having the right support cards can combat this weakness.

While it likely looks like a pretty normal card so far, Gholdengo ex stands out because of its only move. Spending Rush chooses one of the opponent’s Pokémon for every Steel-type energy attached to Gholdengo ex. The attack does 40 damage for each time a Pokémon is chosen, which means that active and benched Pokémon all take decent damage from this one attack.

Best Gholdengo ex decks in Pokémon TCG Pocket

While Gholdengo ex is an excellent card, its Spending Rush attack is only properly utilizable with the right support cards. It also can’t act as the only attacking Pokémon, which is why having a secondary attacker is a good idea.

The best decks to use with Gholdengo ex include the Gholdengo ex X Dialga ex deck, as well as the Gholdengo ex X Orthworm deck.

Gholdengo ex X Dialga ex deck

Gholdengo ex X Dialga ex deck in Pokemon TCG Pocket

Gholdengo ex’s attack grows stronger the more Metal energy it has attached. Therefore, it only makes sense that a Metal energy accelerator like Dialga ex would be the perfect partner for it.

Below are the cards that you’ll need for this deck:

  1. Gimmighoul x2

  2. Gholdengo ex x2

  3. Dialga ex x2

  4. Galarian Meowth x1

  5. Galarian Perrserker x1

  6. Leaf x1

  7. Copycat x1

  8. Lucky Ice Pop x2

  9. Professor’s Research x2

  10. Poké Ball x2

  11. Metal Core Barrier x2

  12. Steel Apron x2

The strategy here is to first send out Dialga ex and ensure it has at least two Metal-type energies attached. In the meantime, add Gholdengo ex and your Galarian Meowth to your hand, using Dialga ex’s Metallic Turbo as many times as you can. Metallic Turbo lets you take two Metal-type energies and attach them to one of your benched Pokémon. Naturally, you want to use this opportunity to attach Metal-type energies to Gholdengo ex.

After loading up Gholdengo ex with enough energy, use Leaf to swap it in for Dialga ex. Now, it’s time to use Spending Rush. Continue using this attack on your enemy to deal constant damage to them. It may also be a good idea to set up your second Gholdengo ex on your bench to ensure you can swap between the two if required.

All of the support cards in this deck aim to maximize Gholdengo ex’s sustainability. Remember, you don’t want it to get knocked out, because that may put you in danger. Instead, use cards such as Lucky Ice Pop to heal your active Gholdengo, and Metal Core Barrier to reduce the damage it takes. You can also evolve your Galarian Meowth whenever you require a tool from your discard pile.

Gholdengo ex X Orthworm deck

Gholdengo ex X Orthworm deck in Pokemon tcg pocket

Orthworm is extremely similar to Dialga ex, since it’s also a Metal energy accelerator. Because of this, this deck is better if you don’t have Dialga ex.

Below are the cards you’ll need for this deck:

  1. Gimmighoul x2

  2. Gholdengo ex x2

  3. Orthworm x2

  4. Lyra x2

  5. Copycat x2

  6. Lucky Ice Pop x2

  7. Professor’s Research x2

  8. Poké Ball x2

  9. Metal Core Barrier x2

  10. Steel Apron x2

Orthworm should act as your starting active Pokémon here as well. Attach a single energy to this card, and then start setting up your Gholdengo ex on the bench. Keep using Orthworm’s Iron Supply move to continue giving Gholdengo ex more energy every turn, but don’t add more than one energy to Orthworm.

This is because you eventually want to use Lyra to switch out Orthworm with Gholdengo ex. If you feel like you don’t have enough energy on Gholdengo yet, then you can always send the second Orthworm to the active spot instead, giving you ample time to set up your main attacker. Once everything is ready, send out Gholdengo ex and start using its Spending Rush to deal devastating damage to the enemy.

Conclusion

It’s no surprise that Gholdengo ex is part of the ongoing meta, since it can deal insane damage to the enemy. However, having a good Metal energy accelerator is key. Otherwise, your Gholdengo ex will just end up getting wiped out before it can reach its true potential. If you don’t have the required cards to construct the decks we mentioned, then you can always buy a Pokémon TCG Pocket top up to change that.
