In the recent Archon quest “Bedtime Story”, we can again get a lot of information from our old friend Dainsleif. Primarily revolving around Caribert and the Abyss Sibling and bringing a hefty amount of World-Building, the quest sets up a new group of antagonists known as The Five Sinners of Khaenri'ah who we will likely be facing off against later down the story. In today’s blog, I’d like to give a brief introduction to these five people.
Dainsleif has already told us that they were once people of great esteem in Khaenri'ah who carried the hopes of the nation. Six of them including Dainsleif himself together went to stop the Vinster King from continuing to rock the foundation of the world. But the five sinners could not resist the call of the Abyss and divided a power that could destroy the world. Here, the power should refer to the power of the Abyss, which could easily be speculated. And that is why the five people became the Five Sinners of Khaenri'ah. What’s more, when the cataclysm occurred, none of them stood up in defense of their nation despite in possession of world-shattering power.
“The Wise” Hroptatyr
In the story of the artifacts “Pale Flame”, Pierro had a link with Hroptatyr. He thought that he failed to stop Khaenri'ah from collapsing because his level of learning could not compare with “The Wise”. And in the description of the quest item “Silver Twig” that we get from Sumeru’s Archon Quest, “The Wise” is also mentioned. He had hung upside down a tree and acquired the knowledge of how to inscribe runes and control sacred words. The kingdom established along the tree’s roots had eventually gained a glimpse of the secret of the cosmos. These lines imply that Khaenri'ah got to know about the forbidden knowledge maybe because of “The Wise”.
“The Visionary” Vedrfolnir
“The Visionary” is familiar to us. The huge purple stone emanating a sinister aura in Archon Quest “Caribert” that leaded Chlothar to establish the Abyss Order is “The Visionary” Vedrfolnir. He seems to have strong power that can tell the future of the whole world and has the ability to know all things from the past to the future. You may also have wondered who created the stone slates of prophesy when you go through the plots of Fontaine. That could be “The Visionary” as well. His another identity is Dainsleif’s older brother, which is really out of imagination.
“Gold” Rhinedottir
She appears the most often among all these five sinners. As the creator of Albedo and many other creatures, we get to know her name since our trip in Mondstadt. And although we do not know for sure whether other four people are really “sinners” as all information is only from Dainsleif and there may be some misunderstanding, “Gold” Rhinedottir certainly deserves this title as she caused disasters in almost every nation in Teyvat. In Mondstadt, there is Dulin. In Liyue, there is the battle in the Chasm. In Izaruma, there is mass death of youkai. In Semeru, there is the disaster in Vourukasha Oasis. In Fontaine, there is Elynas.
“The Foul” Surtalogi
We first know the word “foul” through Tartaglia’s skills. And Tartaglia have learned the art of fighting from Skirk who is a displine of Surtalogi. So we can also deem that the power and skills Tartaglia owes have the same root with Surtalogi. In the Trounce Domain “Shadow of Another World”, we can see a person-like monster in the belly of the All-Devouring Narwhal, which maybe a copy of Surtalogi. And Surtalogi is obviously a man rather proficient at fighting as he even treats the All-Devouring Narwhal that almost bury the whole Fontaine nation as a pet.
“Racher of Solnari” Rerir
It’s a pity that we can find nothing about this sinner in the game. Not even a word mentioned him or her. But inferred from the title “Racher of Solnari”, we can guess that Rerir may be related to the “Crimson Moon” dynasty of Khaenri'ah.
With the new updates, we can know that there are many different influence camps in Teyvat - The Six (Snezhnaya not included), Fatui, the Abyss Order and now the Five sinners. It seems that a big wave may come to wash against the whole land. What will happen next? That really attracts our expectation.
