Where You Start - The First Step
The moment you leave the tutorial cave, you land at a Site of Grace called The First Step. Rest at it to activate it as a respawn point. Then talk to the NPC standing nearby named White Mask Varre.
You must keep talking to him until there is nothing to say, meaning the dialogue is exhausted, and this must be done with every character. Look north, and you will see a ruined church. That is your first destination.
Church of Elleh - Your First Stop
Head north toward the Church of Elleh. On the road, you will see a large mounted enemy called the Tree Sentinel patrolling. Do not fight him yet. Go around him on the left side through the grass.
At the church, talk to the merchant Kale. Buy the Crafting Kit from him. This will unlock the ability to craft items from resources you pick up in the world.
Rest at the Site of Grace inside the church. After you meet Melina and receive Torrent, fast-travel back to the Church of Elleh at night to meet Renna. If she does not appear, you can later buy the Bell from the Twin Maiden Husks at the Roundtable Hold.
Gatefront Ruins - Get Your Horse and the Whetstone
Follow the road north from the church past the enemy camp. Hang to the left side of the camp to avoid the bulk of the soldiers. Just outside the gate is another Site of Grace. Rest at it.
In the center of the ruins, look for a stone staircase leading underground. Inside a chest in that cellar, you will find the Whetstone Knife and your first Ash of War, Storm Stomp, inside a chest in that cellar.
Shortly after resting at a few Sites of Grace, you will be visited by an NPC named Melina. She gives you the Spectral Steed Whistle, which summons your horse, Torrent. Equip it in your pouch, and you can call Torrent anytime you are outside. This makes getting around Limgrave much faster.
Key Items to Grab Early in Limgrave
Before chasing bosses, pick up these items. They make the rest of the early game much smoother.
- Flask of Crimson Tears and Flask of Cerulean Tears: You get these automatically after the tutorial. They are your healing flasks. Crimson restores health. Cerulean restores your magic or skill meter.
- Golden Seeds: These increase the number of uses on your healing flasks. One is near the glowing sapling at the castle grounds of Stormveil. Another is at the eastern corner of Fort Haight in East Limgrave. Always pick these up.
- Sacred Tears: These make each flask use heal for more. One is found at the Third Church of Marika in East Limgrave near a large sculpture surrounded by orange flowers.
- Spirit Calling Bell: Get this from Renna at the Church of Elleh at night after finding Torrent. Without it, you cannot use Spirit Ashes to summon help in boss fights.
This is also a good time to remind players who are still deciding whether to buy: picking up a LootBar game key gets you instant access to all of this content at a lower price than the standard store listing.
Limgrave Bosses - Which to Fight and When
Beastman of Farum Azula
Located in Groveside Cave in western Limgrave. This is one of the earliest dungeon bosses in the game and a good fight for beginners to learn basic combat timing.
Tree Sentinel
Right outside the Church of Elleh. He is on horseback, hits very hard, and is not meant to be fought at level 1. Come back once you have better gear and a few levels. Defeating him rewards the Golden Halberd, a strong early weapon.
Erdtree Burial Watchdog
The boss of Stormfoot Catacombs. It looks like a stone statue and attacks with heavy slam attacks and magical strikes.
Flying Dragon Agheel
Found in the middle of Agheel Lake in central Limgrave. He swoops down and attacks when you cross the lake. You can skip him entirely or try the fight once to test your current damage. Beating him gives Dragon Heart, which you can use at the Dragon Communion altar to unlock powerful incantations.
Demi-Human Chiefs
Found in Coastal Cave near the beach. Players fight two chiefs along with several smaller enemies. Summoning Spirit Ashes can make the fight easier.
Patches
Encountered in Murkwater Cave. During the fight, Patches will surrender when his health drops low. If you spare him, he later becomes a merchant and sells useful items to help you fight Margit the Fell Omen.
Bloodhound Knight Darriwil
Found inside the Forlorn Hound Evergaol in southern Limgrave. This boss is fast and aggressive, using quick dash attacks and strong slashes. Defeating him rewards the powerful Bloodhound's Fang curved sword.
Stonedigger Troll
Found at the end of Limgrave Tunnels. This large troll is resistant to many weapons but takes more damage from strike attacks like hammers.
These bosses make up the main encounters players can find while exploring Limgrave before heading toward Margit the Fell Omen at the entrance of Stormveil Castle.
Optional Areas Worth Doing Before Stormveil
Weeping Peninsula: South of Limgrave across the Bridge of Sacrifice. Weaker enemies, good weapons to find, and easier Golden Seeds. Recommended before fighting Margit if you are struggling.
Murkwater Cave: Along the stream leading north to Agheel Lake. You fight Patches here as a boss. Once his health reaches 50%, he will surrender and stop attacking immediately. If you choose to forgive him, he will then open a shop where you can buy Margit's Shackle.
Stormfoot Catacombs: An early dungeon in West Limgrave. The boss inside is the Erdtree Burial Watchdog. Defeat it for the Noble Sorcerer Ashes.
Limgrave Tunnels: Located at the far northern tip of Agheel Lake, tucked into the cliffside. You can gallop past the dragon on Torrent to reach the entrance. Contains Smithing Stones to upgrade your weapon early, which is one of the most important things you can do in the first few hours.
Conclusion
One of the greatest places to start in any open-world role-playing game is Limgrave. You won't need to hold your hand too firmly to grasp how Elden Ring operates.
Rest at every Site of Grace you encounter, improve your weapon as soon as you can at the Limgrave Tunnels, obtain the Spirit Calling Bell from Renna, and wait to engage in combat with Margit until you are prepared.
Take your time, discover every Golden Seed and Sacred Tear you come across by exploring all of these side places. You will need these as things get tougher after Stormveil Castle because they will make every boss fight much simpler.
