The Fall of the Proteus is a main Story quest in Dune Awakening that guides you into the beginning of the game as a tutorial on surviving in the vast deserts of Arrakis.
Upon finishing up with your character creation, in the very first step, you will find yourself in a deserted sandy cave, the wreckage of the crashed Proteus, a ship once feared in all of Arrakis.
The next steps involve following the in-game pop-ups that ask you to do the respective tasks, which eventually lead you to Zantara, an NPC whom you have to follow along the course of the game.
The various key resources in the game include Solari, which can be said as an equivalent of gold or credits in other games, so make sure to buy Dune: Awakening Solari from LootBar, as it will be used for buying goods, crafting materials, and other services.
First Tasks
The first tasks include building a scrap metal knife using salvaged parts from your surroundings. You will find a body and a Fremkit upon him, grab it, open the crafting menu, and craft the scrap metal knife.
Upon finishing the crafting, you will find a sealed door. Cut through the sealed door using the knife, and replenish your health and hydration by consuming the red flowers.
This is all for the very first room from where you start playing, inside the wrecked Proteus. Next, you have to find your way through the other Larger rooms.
Encountering Threats
When you reach the larger room, collect some fibre from the bushes, and you will be asked to create a HealKit in the crafting menu. Once you have used the kit, you can climb the walls behind the body to continue with the game.
You will be having a conversation with Zantara, and then have to walk down to the remains of the ship, where you will find a stranded soldier in an orange-grey suit. Loot the body and you will find a Cutteray, which will be used to remove the large boulders. You can use analysis mode by clicking the right mouse button or the left console trigger to scan the boulders, and once you see the bright blue line, use Fire Mode by clicking the left mouse button or the right console trigger to shoot at this blue line - this will break the rock apart and you can pass through.
Repeat the similar step on the second boulder as well as the door behind it. This is a general strategy to make way, wherever you find yourself blocked by obstacles.
Once you take down the door, you have to fight your first two enemies inside the ship, so make sure to swap the knife back from the Cutteray.
Fighting and Survival Tactics
The enemies serve to introduce you to the basic melee combat skills with your knife. You will learn certain fighting tactics, and dodge incoming strikes as the game emphasizes more on being tactical rather than spamming attacks. You can also top up Dune: Awakening to get items that will make your progress faster by getting new items to defeat your enemies. Upon defeating your first enemies inside the ship, you will find another one in the next room. Kill it and then proceed to replenish your health.
After dealing with those enemies, your HUD will flash warnings about hydration and stamina. Hydration is one of the key factors that you should keep in check every time you fight or travel in the wilderness of the deserts of Arrakins.
As discussed earlier, you must locate and consume Dew Flowers – the glowing desert plants to restore hydration. Your stamina is directly related to hydration. If you stay dehydrated, you can’t fight or climb, and you will get tired easily. Conversely, drinking too much water can lead to nausea, which weakens you in other ways. Balancing out these things in this low-threat environment prepares you for the upcoming chapters where you have to apply these skills to survive throughout the game.
Breaching Through the Barriers
After defeating the enemies and replenishing your health, you will encounter a Pentashield barrier.
To cross it, you have to find the Pentashield Key, which lies further inside the wreck. You will find it on top of a storage box. Once retrieved, pick up the Pentashield Wristband Key to move through the shields ahead. The wristband key is like an electronic key that allows you to pass through barriers or shields when you are wearing it.
After passing through the barriers, you will find your way into the transmission room, and there you will find another body lying on a chair, a couple of steps ahead. Interact with it by clicking the activate transmitter option to start the next cutscene that marks the final signal of the Proteus.
After completing this cutscene, you will be finishing with the quest - The fall of the Proteus. After activating the console by using the transmitter, you will be asked to flee from the Proteus by using a tunnel that leads to the surface of Arrakis. Upon emerging to the surface, you will be faced with a new survival threat: sun’s exposure. The game then officially transitions into the next quest: A New Beginning. By learning from the tactics of the game until now, you will be heading into a new world.
Conclusion
The Fall of the Proteus Quest in Dune: Awakening is essentially a tutorial experience that familiarizes you with the game mechanics and the various survival tactics. By learning the various Combat styles, crafting essentials from salvaged items, balancing your hydration and stamina, defeating enemies, and getting past barriers, you now know how things work and can finally be able to step foot into the new, vivid experiences of the next chapters.
