All Playable Characters in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
There are six playable characters in the game, each with different back stories and strengths. You can try out their strengths for yourself if you’ve bought Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 from a platform such as LootBar.
Gustave
Gustave is a native of Lumière who worked as an engineer maintaining city systems. He grew up under the threat of the Paintress and joined Expedition 33 to stop her. Maelle is his foster sister, and the two share a close relationship. Gustave’s story ends with the character sacrificing himself to save Maelle.
Gustave’s mechanical background is highlighted in his combat, as the character uses unique weapons. His gameplay style revolves around building an internal energy gauge that allows him to deal stronger attacks.
Sciel
Sciel is a farmer who later transitioned into a teacher. She has experienced hardship, which gives her a different perspective on the world. Despite this, she has a warm personality with comic elements. The character brings a grounded feel to the group.
Sciel wields a scythe and uses a mechanic called Foretell, which applies stacks to enemies. She can later consume the stacks to increase her attacks’ damage. Her gameplay style is different from the other members, and you must set up stacks perfect for them to benefit later.
Maelle
Maelle is the youngest member of Expedition 33, who grew up as an orphan. She was eventually taken in by Gustave and grew up as his foster sister. Her ambition to forge her own path and find a purpose separate from the city drives her.
Maelle uses a rapier while fighting, and her combat style revolves around various stances. You must adapt to and manage the different stances to change her performance in battle.
Verso
Verso initially observes the Expedition rather than joining, and provides information about Renoir because of their shared history. The character eventually realizes that his goals align with the group and joins the Expedition.
Verso uses precision weapons and a system that rewards skillful gameplay. Your attacks become more effective if you land hits, avoid damage, and time everything perfectly. You can build up ranks or status to buff his combat.
Lune
Lune is the daughter of renowned researchers who died before the Expedition began. She wants to complete her parents’ work by finding out the answer to the central mystery. Her informational role is instrumental within the group.
Lune is a mage-type character who generates elemental effects called Stains through her abilities. She can absorb Stains to buff her attacks and abilities. Her gameplay focuses on these elemental effects, and you must learn to use them to master her combat.
Monoco
Monoco is a member of the Gestral, a race that exists for combat. Monoco is unique because most Gestral can’t speak or interact with humans. He joins the expedition because of the challenge and combat. He fights because he wants to rather than because of the influence of the Paintress.
Monoco’s gameplay is the most unique and powerful, as he can transform into enemies and use their abilities. He has a mechanic referred to as the Bestial Wheel, which changes his combat and abilities. The character revolves around adaptability and variety.
