To take part in Riichi Mahjong, first find the Starland Club building in the new Starland Island. Then go to the 2nd floor of the building where the game is held.

Participating in the activity not only lets you enjoy the competitiveness of the activity but also gives rewards for completing inside quests. These quests are as follows:

  • 5x win a hand
  • 3x win a hand (Riichi)
  • Complete a Tanyao 3 times, while finishing a winning hand
  • Achieve a winning hand valued at 3 han or more

In order to receive all the rewards, players must obtain a total of 20000 points. The rewards consist of module boxes, exclusive cosmetic rewards and other resources. To unlock more exclusive cosmetics, players can buy Blue Protocol: Star Resonance Orbs.

Riichi Mahjong Mechanism

In Riichi Mahjong, a maximum of 4 players can play at a time. The game features a 34 distinct kind of tiles in Mahjong and each of the types has 4 copies, which is 136 tiles in total.

The Three Suits

The foundation of the game lies in its three suits, each carrying numbers from 1 to 9. The three suits are:

  • Bamboo or Souzu: Looks like a bamboo rod or a stick
  • Circle or Pinzu: looks like dots or coins
  • Character or Manzu: Uses chinese character for numbers

Every number in each suit appears four times, creating a flowing rhythm of repetition and possibility. The 1s and 9s are called the terminal tiles.

Honor Tiles

Beyond the numbered tiles, there are also other 7 tiles called honor tiles that carry symbolic meaning instead of numerical value:

  • Red Dragon tiles
  • Green Dragon tiles
  • White Dragon tiles
  • East Wind tiles
  • South Wind tiles
  • West Wind tiles
  • North Wind tiles

Event Interface and Mechanics

Right after you start the game, you will see 4 different sets of tiles on the table, each of them consisting of 13 tiles. The closest one will be your set of tiles.

The square in the center is a crucial part of the game which will display the following things:

  • Your seat wind
  • Current hand
  • Current status of the Live wall

Your seat wind will determine the rotation position. The east wind will always be the first to go, then South, then West and then lastly the North. This cycle continues until the end of every round after which the seat wind starts rotating in the opposite direction.

The remaining time for your turn will be displayed above the right most tile on your side. The grey timer will represent your current turn remaining time while the blue number will display the extra time.

On the top right corner, the question mark will display the full list of valid yaku hands that is simply termed as the winning hand. This will also display any han or points.

Finally, on the top left corner, the row of tiles displays the dead wall. The face-up tiles act as the Dora tile which grants additional points, or han, for the winning hand. The next numerical tile after the dora tile will grant extra han. For example, considering the dora tile features a Manzu 4, then the Manzu 5 tile will give a bonus hand. Likewise, for dragon tiles, if the dora tile is green then the red tiles will grant bonus han and same goes for the Wind tiles.

How to Win

The goal of the game is to complete a hand with a yaku. The game offers many forms of yaku but for new players, the beginner-friendly ones are Riichi and Tanyao. The most used strategy to win a hand is by completing 4 melds and 1 pair. A meld is a combination of a triplet or a sequence, a triplet being three identical tiles, and a sequence made of three numerically consecutive tiles in one suit.

Start your turn by choosing a tile to throw in the discard pile while trying to remove all tiles that don't serve the yaku you are building. When you get a winning hand, you can either call Tsumo or Ron.

Conclusion

To sum up, Riichi Mahjong adds the traditional mahjong elements into the game and offers a different form of competition while also giving you the opportunity to get rewarded.

Besides playing steadily, doing event quests and learning new tactis you can not only get rewards but also raise your skill level. For instance, if your goal is to fasten your progress and get exclusive cosmetics, LootBar can be your helper as it is quite simple to top up Blue Protocol: Star Resonance via LootBar so that you can make the most of this exceptional event and your gaming journey as a whole.
