Black Myth Wukong: How to Unlock the Secret Ending (True Ending)

Black Myth: Wukong became a success for multiple reasons, with its gripping narrative being a strong element. The game sees the player travel the world, learning new things and eventually reaching the end. For most players, the game ends with the story looping by giving the character a cycle of reincarnation. However, there is a secret ending that changes everything you know about the game and gives a sense of fulfillment not provided by the original ending.

What is the secret ending?

The original ending is triggered after you defeat the final boss, The Great Sage’s Broken Shell. The Destined One absorbs Wukong’s six senses, seemingly fulfilling the prophecy. But when The Old Monkey crowns The Destined One, he is imprisoned in the same rock that once trapped Wukong. While the ending finalizes the story, it isn’t well-liked, primarily because The Destined One ultimately succumbed to the crown’s curse.

The secret ending, on the other hand, breaks Wukong’s cycle, giving The Destined One a more fulfilling resolution. The final boss fight and the subsequent events remain the same, but you have to complete several other challenges to trigger the true ending. After meeting the requirements, when The Old Monkey crowns The Destined One, he isn’t imprisoned in the rock. Players instead see Wukong’s journey come full circle and end the crown’s curse. If you don’t have the game but want to see the true ending, you can buy it from LootBar!

How to unlock the secret ending

The secret ending is only unlocked after you complete all the secret areas across all of the game’s chapters. Each secret area is either hidden or not completely known and has quests or bosses.

Ancient Guanyin Temple (Chapter 1)

This is one of the simpler quests, but it makes sense that it's secret. You must locate and ring three bells that are hidden across the Black Wind Forest. Once all three bells are rung, you will teleport to the Ancient Guanyin Temple, where you must defeat the boss Elder Jinchi.

Here are the locations for all three bells:

  • The first bell is located behind the optional boss, Guangzhi, in the Forest of Wolves.

  • The second bell is located behind the mandatory boss, Guangmou, in Bamboo Grove.

  • The third bell is near the mandatory boss, Whiteclad Noble, in Bamboo Grove.

The bells can be rung in any order, but you must return to the bell near Whiteclad Noble after defeating the boss. You need to interact with a dead fox hanging from a tree there to clear the area.

Lost Kingdom of Sahali (Chapter 2)

Drunken boar in Black Myth: Wukong.

This area can be found after completing the drunken boar quest, which can be started near the Fright Cliff. The drunken boar is known as the Yellow-Robed Squire, and you need to give it a Sobering Stone and a Jade Lotus. You will then have to fight the drunken boar to unlock the area. Once inside the Kingdom of Sahali, you need to defeat two bosses, the Tiger Vanguard and Fuban, to clear the area.

Treasure Hunter quest (Chapter 3)

The Treasure Hunter isn’t hidden or secret, but his quest is an overlooked side challenge. He can be found at the North Shore of the Bitter Lake, and you must save him from enemies. The quest starts after you talk to him, and it focuses on finding him again at the Valley of Ecstasy. He will be near the Towers of Karma Shrine, and you must save him from the cold using the Ring of Fire Spell. He will then task you with fighting the boss, Green-Capped Martialist. Defeating the boss will complete the quest and net you Spell Binder as a reward.

Purple Cloud Mountain (Chapter 4)

To access this area, you need to defeat the boss, Venom Daoist, twice. His first location is near the Pool of Shattered Jade Shrine. You can attack the large cocoon to make the boss appear. Once he’s defeated, go to the Court of Illumination shrine, and you will find him near the Venom Daoist’s lair at the highest point of the mountain. Interact with the colorful mural after defeating the boss to be teleported to the Purple Cloud Mountain. Once there, you will need to go to the top of the mountain and defeat Scorpionlord, Daoist Mi, and Duskveil bosses.

Bishui Cave (Chapter 5)

Pale Axe Stalwart in Black Myth: Wukong.

Players need to locate and defeat five elemental carts scattered across the region to access Bishui Cave. You can enter the cave after all five are defeated and fight the Golden-Eyed Beast.

The carts can be found at the following locations:

  • The Pale Axe Stalwart is near the Ashen Pass 1 Shrine.

  • The Brown Iron Cart and the Gray Bronze Cart are near the Ashen Pass 2 Shrine.

  • The Crimson Silver Cart is near the main path.

  • The Rusty Gold Cart is near the Cooling Slope Shrine.

You need to talk to the Pale Axe Stalwart after defeating it and after defeating the Brown Iron Cart and the Gray Bronze Cart. You will then need to speak to it one last time after defeating all the carts, and you will be able to enter Bishui Cave through the door behind Rusty Gold Cart’s Arena.

Mount Mei (Chapter 6)

Mei-Jian Peak in Black Myth: Wukong.

Once you have covered all the extra challenges across Chapters 1 through 5, you need to travel to the Great Pagoda Shrine. There, you will trigger a cutscene in the highest part of the room behind the shrine, and teleport to the Mount Mei area. Head to the top of the mountain to fight the secret boss, Erlang. The final secret boss has three phases: Erlang, the Four Heavenly Kings, and Erlang’s lion form.

Complete the game normally after you finish all the secret tasks, and you will get the true ending instead of the original one.

Conclusion

The game’s secret ending is straightforward to unlock, but it requires players to put in even more time. While not a happy ending, it's preferred over The Destined One taking over as a petrified rock. If you haven't played the game, you can get the Steam key and check out the game’s true ending.
