Fleet Building is one of the main game mechanics in Azur Lane. Many of us struggle to find the best fleet compositions. But that makes people ask, why do you even want to focus on fleet building? If you want to maximise the time you spend on the chapters and get through them fast, you will have to get a suitable fleet. You can always do an Azur Lane top up from LootBar to make things easier.
Some of the fleets that you use in the chapter might not work against the bosses. So, you will have to focus on building your fleets. While building fleets can be a hard game mechanic to master, we are here to help you. In this guide, we will cover the composition of the fleet and some of the characters that will help in fitting into the role. Let’s get started!

Understanding Fleets in Azur Lane
Firstly, to start off, if you are starting out in Azur Lane, this guide won’t be of that much help, but you can still take notes. As for fleets, you can have two different types of fleets: a mob fleet and a boss fleet.
What does a mob fleet do? The mob fleet can:
· Easily take out everything else except the main boss.
· Used for levelling ships.
· Can survive multiple battles in succession.
· Mainly used throughout the chapters of Azur Lane.
The boss fleet mainly focuses on the following aspects:
· Mainly built to take out the bosses of the stages.
· They will comprise your best ships with the best gear.
· Can deal the most amount of damage within the round.
· Always kept at full health for the boss round.
The Roles of the Ships in Azur Lane
To understand the roles, you will have to find out what works for you. Some of the characters that we mention here might not fit your lineup. So, feel free to tinker and mess around with the lineup till you find one that satisfies your needs. But, in general, the roles of the ships are as follows:
For the Backline Ships, we have:
· The Healers.
· The Damage Dealers.
· The Offensive Support.
· The Defensive Support.
For the Vanguard Ships, we have:
· The SuperTanks.
· The Tanks.
· The Damage Dealers.
· The AA Carrys.
· The AAs.
· The ASWs
· The Offensive Support.
· The Defensive Support
Here, if you notice, there are some carry-overs between the Vanguard and the Backline, like the Damage Dealers and the Supports. While they might do the same thing, the main thing lies in their endurance or their survivability. But, the best way to get these ships is by doing a top up Azur Lane.
The Backline Ships in Azur Lane
The backline ships refer to the ship placed at the back of a lineup. These ships will be the foundation of your lineup.
The Healers
Healers are the most essential part of a mob fleet. These ships will help you fight for a long time and sustain the other ships in your lineup. Some of the healers include:
· Perseus
· Unicorn
· Ryuuhou
· Zuihou
· Painlevé
The Damage Dealers
Damage Dealers will help you get through the battles with ease. The ones in the backline will focus on damage, with their health being less than what you need for a vanguard. Some of the Damage Dealers include:
· Shinano
· Mecklenburg
· Admiral Nakhimov
· Ulrich von Hutten
· Centaur
· Musashi
The Offensive Support
Offensive Support in Azur Lane refers to the ship that gives your lineup offensive buffs but deals light damage. Some of these ships include:
· New Jersey
· Chkalov
· Richelieu
· Hiei
· Alsace
The Defensive Support
Similar to the Offensive Support, Defensive Support ships give your lineup defensive buffs but deal light damage. Some of these ships include:
· Aquila
· Shoukaku
· Daisen
· Albion
· Raffaello
The Vanguard Ships in Azur Lane
The Vanguard Ships refer to the ships that are placed in the front of your lineup. They will be taking the most hits and dealing the most amount in usual cases. You will have to nail how your vanguard is formed to easily go through the stages.
The SuperTanks
SuperTank ships are the ships that can survive anything, almost any battle. These ships can take on any type of damage and help others deal damage at the same time. Some os these ships include:
· Brest
· Ägir
· Kronshtadt
· Guam
· Felix Schultz
The Tanks
Tanks are similar to the SuperTanks but with a lower HP. These ships, too, can take the brunt of the damage that is dealt. Some of these ships are:
· Azuma
· Bayard
· L'Indomptable
· Shimanto
· Unzen
The Damage Dealers
These damage deals can deal heavy damage while being very bulky. They can take and deal damage at their discretion. Some of the damage dealers are:
· Harbin
· Gouden Leeuw
· Bayard
· Ibuki
· Watarase
The AA Carrys
AA Carrys are the ships that can solve all of the fleet’s AA battles. One of these ships can handle all of the enemy aircraft with ease. The AA Carrys include:
· Shimanto
· Isuzu (Retrofit)
· San Diego (Retrofit)
· Gouden Leeuw
· Laffey II
The AAs
The AA ships can also take care of the enemy aircraft, but not to the calibre of the AA carrys. If you have only AAs, it is best to have at least two in each lineup to be on the safer side. The AAs include:
· Juneau (Retrofit)
· Yat Sen (Retrofit)
· Bellona
· Hammann II
The ASWs
ASWs are the ships that can fight against the enemy submarines in any round of battles. These ships are very potent if you equip them with Hedgehog. Some of the ASWs are:
· Eldridge (Retrofit)
· Jervis
· Laffey II
· Hammann II
· Wakatsuki
The Offensive Support
Similar to the Offensive Support in the Backline, the Vanguard Offensive Support does the same thing, but they have more health. These ships provide you with a decent offensive buff and decent tanking ability. Some of these ships are:
· Avrora
· Ägir
· Helena (Retrofit)
· Gloucester
· Trafalgar
The Defensive Support
The Defensive Support in the Vanguard does the same thing as the ones in the backline. But these ships have more attacking prowess and better health. Some of these ships include:
· Jeanne d'Arc
· Shimanto
· Gouden Leeuw
· Eldridge (Retrofit)
· De Zeven Provinciën
Conclusion
In Azur Lane, your lineup will decide the outcomes of the battles you fight. While this guide gives you a blueprint, feel free to mess around with the various ships and lineups. But, most importantly, have fun. May your battles be fruitful and victorious.
