What is Call of the Abyss in Identity V?

Identity V Call of the Abyss IX cover

Those who have been playing Identity V for a while will likely already know that Call of the Abyss is the biggest annual event in the game. It mixes the festivities of an in-game event with the competitiveness of an esports tournament to deliver something awesome. Of course, it wouldn’t be a proper event without rewards for players to obtain.

During this event, players compete against other players after forming their own teams. As the name suggests, Call of the Abyss IX is the ninth time this annual tournament is taking place, and this time, there are several stages that players must learn about. Of course, while LootBar is still the best way for players to get cosmetics for their favorite characters, participating in Call of the Abyss can yield some nice rewards too.

The Call of the Abyss event has multiple stages. Everything eventually culminates in a grand final that pits some of the best teams against each other.

Sacred Sanctum

Starting on December 31, 2025, and ending on January 8, 2026, this phase is all about forming teams for the rest of the tournament event. Every team must have five to seven players, and a team cannot be registered after it has been disbanded. This is also one of the most important phases, since not registering means your team can’t participate.

What some players may not know is that they can also register to participate until January 15, giving more time to finalize the teams. Each team’s roster is locked, and players can also participate in matches during this time for some early event rewards, potentially giving players a much-needed motivation boost through in-game goodies.

Divine Procession

The Divine Procession phase is the core early competition phase, which starts on January 8 and lasts until January 22. It wouldn’t be a stretch to call this phase a hybrid between competitive matches and festival progress for players who don’t really want to get into the nitty-gritty part of things.

Teams earn points in this stage by playing the following types of matches:

  • Abyss Battles

  • Quick Matches

  • Ranked Matches

All of the points acquired through these means give players Divine Procession points, which determine the team rankings. As for how points are given, only the points of the five best players on every team are counted, with there also being daily limitations to avoid too much grinding.

The goal here is to get as many points as you can, because only 100 teams can apply per region. Try to rank higher in matches to get more points, and don’t forget that certain milestones give you festive tokens that you can trade in for items.

Radiant Altar

The Radiant Altar phase is the competitive phase of this tournament, where only the teams that passed the previous stage can participate. Here, every team only competes in ranked matches using the regular ranked system to determine competitive placements. This also means that points in this phase are purely from ranked performances, and a better placement here means your team gets more points.

Things aren’t so lax here, though. There’s a minimum number of matches that every team must play for them to stay in the rankings, and every region has its own leaderboard. The top 8 teams here qualify for the online qualifiers, except the Japan region, which only sends the top 6. This stage ultimately determines which teams move to the online qualifiers and which teams get placement rewards like team fragments.

Final Question

The Final Question phase is the last phase of the event. It’s when the final rankings are announced to determine which teams have performed the best. The best eight teams are also invited to the online qualifiers and must retain the same teams as they used in the previous stage.

This is the culmination of everything players have gone through over the days of the event, so it makes sense that players get the most rewards here. All of this leads to the offline grand finals that players can watch from home.

Conclusion

This concludes everything to know about the Call of the Abyss IX (COA9) tournament in Identity V. It makes sense that so many players are always excited for this event, since it’s the perfect combination of competitiveness and seeking rewards. Of course, if you’re looking to get more rewards in the process, you can always buy an Identity V Echoes top up or two.
